Introduction to 2017 Trip
Birdsville has been on my bucket list for a long time, and this could be the year.
As the road in to Birdsville from the south involves a lot of dirt, we have decided to sneak in from the north - which involves 70 km of dirt road.
Our plan commences in the Wimmera and the Mallee as we visit towns that have large murals on their grain silos.
We then gradually meander our way to Birdsville via Bourke and Charleville. We will then be in the Diamantina shire, which covers 95,000 square km but has only 300 residents. Our arrival will increase the population by nearly one percent!
It just so happens that when we are scheduled to be in Birdsville, the Big Red Bash is on. This event is a significant music festival in the middle of nowhere. We have bought our tickets and will be there for my birthday. There will be lots of sand and music but not much water or electricity or showers. It should be interesting.
After leaving Birdsville we hope to attend the camel races at Bedourie, then see more of the Diamantina shire.
We then meander east until we run out of land mass, where we set up camp on the coast.
Regular readers of my previous blogs have suggested that past blogs seem to have a common, or regular, theme, such as coffee, food or alcohol. I would like to think that the theme this year will be "culture" - as in art work (painted silos and murals), history, music (Big Red Bash) and maybe architecture. You readers can be the judge. However the essentials of life, such as food and wine, may get a mention from time to time.
Sounds easy! I hope you enjoy the trip.

Hi Chris and Shirley looks like a good trip. Stirs memories and makes us sad not to be with you. Good to see the camp oven in use. Dags
ReplyDeleteThe camp oven and gas bottle BBQ are really paying their way (as is the cheap hand saw from Bunnings).
